I will tell you that I am really grateful that the vast majority of my patients have way above average intelligence. Sometimes I have found that a high IQ gets in conflict with what people feel they deserve for themselves.
My patient I will call “Sam” came in to have his teeth fixed because of his Mercedes Car. He told the story that he had some minor repair done on his car. When the dealership called to tell him the estimate was going to be over $2500. he told them to fix it without blinking an eye. Yet when he had a prescription filled for his own health he threw a fit when the bill was a small fraction of that at $250. That finally hit him between the eyes that he had some values about what was really important all screwed up. He came to me and said, “It’s time to fix my teeth”. He knew that he had let things slide a long time and that frankly his car looked really great and his own appearance was embarrassing. He asked his physician to recommend a dentist and he landed in my office from that. We had to make up for 20 years of near neglect and Sam came out with a winning smile. When we were finished he was so grateful. He uses his smile every day! He said it was the best money he had ever spent.
